The Theatre of the Oppressed Casablanca troupe was founded in 2012 in Casablanca, Morocco.
It is an artistic initiative shaped within the Moroccan cultural landscape, founded by young individuals from the Moroccan democratic movement.
The troupe does not follow the principle of “art for art’s sake”, but rather seeks to bring art out of elite salons and into public spaces, recognizing it as one of the most powerful tools for change.
The troupe addresses communities experiencing various forms of oppression (social, cultural, gender-based…).
Their methodology expands on the artistic and pedagogical approach developed by Augusto Boal and is based on two core principles:
Transforming the spectator (a passive observer) into the protagonist of the dramatic action – a subject, a creator, a transformer.
Not merely reflecting on the past, but preparing for the future.
While honoring Boal’s original approach, the troupe works to fuse it with traditional Moroccan performance forms, especially the art of Al Halqa. This led to the creation of a new artistic concept: Halqa Forum.
