A forum theatre piece shedding light on violence against women, which intensified during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.
The play “Nothing to Prove” sheds light on the phenomenon of violence against women, whose rate increased during the Covid-19 pandemic with the introduction of quarantine measures. This situation led to a high rate of domestic violence due to forced cohabitation: an increase in cases of violence against women, ranging from 50% to 60%, was recorded during the pandemic, according to distress calls received by organizations, showing that women were exposed to all forms of violence, including psychological and economic.
In the first scene, the play portrays psychological violence through the character of Nawal, a housewife who lives under constraint with her child and her husband, Karim, who humiliates her and causes her psychological distress.
The second scene depicts the economic violence experienced by Maryam, a teacher forced to work from home and live with a husband who takes advantage of the quarantine situation and her inability to go out in order to manipulate her for money.
After each scene, the forum’s facilitator, “The Joker,” opens up a space allowing the audience to contribute to the performance by inviting them to step into the actors’ shoes to try to find possible solutions to the violence faced by the play’s heroines, as well as the role of the law in reducing this phenomenon.
